At PCFA, we’re always looking for simple, sensible ways to improve the environment around our teams. As part of that, we’re pleased to share that PCFA has now joined the Smokefree Sidelines scheme.
What is Smokefree Sidelines?
Smokefree Sidelines is a public health initiative designed to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke at grassroots sports events. The aim is to create a healthier, more family-friendly environment for children and young people by encouraging smoke-free areas around pitches, training grounds and sports facilities. It’s not about telling people off — it’s about setting a positive example, protecting young players, and making matchdays more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Why this matters
Grassroots football isn’t just about what happens on the pitch. It’s also about the atmosphere around it, the sidelines, the support, and the example we set for our young players.
The Smokefree Sidelines scheme helps create a healthier, more family friendly space where children can enjoy their football without exposure to smoke.
Before today’s home match
Ahead of today’s home fixture between PCFA U10s and Rossington U10s, both teams came together to take a photo holding the Smokefree Sidelines banner. It was a nice moment and a positive way to show support for the message.

Over the coming weeks, you may notice some additional bunting or banners around the pitch. These are part of the scheme and act as a friendly reminder of the environment we’re aiming to create.
Putting players first
We understand this change may not suit everyone, and we appreciate people’s understanding. For us, it’s about putting the health and wellbeing of our players and families first, and continuing to make matchdays welcoming for everyone involved.

Thank you to parents, players, coaches and visiting teams for supporting PCFA as we keep working to do grassroots football the right way.
